Literary analysis of The Great Gatsby Chapter 5 is about getting an insight into one of the most spectacular novels from the 20s. This novel by F. Scott. Fitzgerald did not get specific importance as it received after many years of its publication. 

About Author 

F. Scott. Fitzgerald was born in 1896 and died in 1940. He was a short story writer, essayist, novelist, and screenwriter. Scott was a dropout from Princeton University. His notable works are The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night, Six tales of the Jazz Age, and The side of paradise. 

Literary Analysis of The Great Gatsby Chapter 5

When Nick came back from city, he meets Gatsby at his mansion’s lawn late at night. Nick feels like as Gatsby is kind of tensed and asks him if want to swim. He takes an idea that Gatsby wants to ask about setting his meeting with Daisy. Nick agreed to it and Gatsby offered him to join his confidential business, which is an illegal racket. An offensive feeling runs through Gatsby want to buy him, but he continue to discuss the plan to meet Daisy. While Nick is helping Jay wholeheartedly, he thinks of thanking him by offering monetary reward. It shows the mentality of ‘new money’ that how are they measure everything with money.

When the meeting day arrives, it was raining outside, but still, Gatsby made sure that Nick’s garden’s grass is all trimmed and his house is full of flowers. When Daisy comes at Nick’s house, Gatsby goes somewhere and appears at front door looking very sick. He hit the clock mistakenly as well, which is sort of a symbol that how time comes in between them whenever he wants to settle things with Daisy.

Gatsby Meets Daisy

They meet like strangers initially, whereas, Gatsby was overwhelmed by the emotions. Nick decided to leave them alone so that they could talk. When he comes back after half an hour, they both seemed content. All of them went to have a tour of Gatsby’s mansion and in his bedroom, he tells the story of staring at green light. When Gatsby showed her his huge collection of English shirts, she started crying. Her tears might be a feeling inside her that she really loves him or is it because he has a financial security now.

On the other hand, Nick is thinking about Daisy’s behaviour as a lover. He wonders that whether she really love Jay since she married another guy for the sake of money. However, Gatsby was still in love with her, which made him living in the past. He is not looking to the fact that whether Daisy will change further for him or not.

After touring Gatsby’s house, they comes outside in the beautifully crafted garden. Gatsby tells Daisy that this mist on the sea stops him from seeing green light on Daisy’s dock. Though, he does not need to see that light anymore since Daisy was with him.

They come inside and someone from his house plays piano for them. His name was wing Klipspringer who used to visit mansion every now and then. Gatsby hold Daisy and they began to move along on the music. Nick felt like he is no loner needed so he left them alone and came out in the rain. Gatsby seems like unaware of Nick’s presence because he has attained hi dream of having Daisy. This hows another trait of new money.
